A Maryland man was in the Westmoreland County Prison on $100,000 bond Friday, accused of assaulting two state troopers who tried to subdue him as he threatened to set fire to his hotel room.

Mikel A. Lawhorn, 62, was arraigned on aggravated assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and harassment charges after the 4 a.m. incident at the Holiday Inn Express, just off Route 22, in Salem Township.

Trooper Brian Hupe of the Kiski station said troopers were called to the hotel after a night manager reported that Lawhorn was agitated, had barricaded himself in his room and reportedly had a gun.

When troopers arrived, Hupe said he “could hear Lawhorn screaming from inside his room.”

“When I attempted to speak with Lawhorn, he stated he had a gun and that he was going to light his room on fire. While in the hallway, I could also hear Lawhorn damaging the interior of his room,” Hupe wrote in court documents.

After about 20 minutes, Lawhorn opened his door and a physical struggle ensued with the troopers. Hupe said another trooper cut his right knee on a piece of glass while attempting to subdue Lawhorn.

“Lawhorn indicated he was under the influence of cocaine and Xanax pills,” Hupe wrote in court documents.

Hotel officials told troopers that Lawhorn caused more than $300 damage to his room.

District Judge Jason Buczak ordered Lawhorn held in the county prison after he failed to post $100,000 bail. Prior to being taken to the county prison, Lawhorn was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
