A man who authorities said broke into a Mt. Pleasant Township home Tuesday and slept in a bed tried to bribe troopers to let him go without arrest, according to state police.
Christopher M. Sherrick, 35, is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, bribery and related offenses. He has addresses in Irwin and Connellsville, according to police and court records.
Troopers said they were called to Mount Joy Road at 4:40 p.m. and found Sherrick and the residents, who reported that they returned home to find him there. Sherrick’s identification card and phone charger were found on the master bedroom nightstand and the bed was disheveled, police said.
While he was being processed at the Greensburg station, Sherrick offered troopers $400,000 to “let him go free,” troopers said in court papers. Police said he admitted to being inside the home.
He was arraigned just before 9 p.m. and is free on $5,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled. He did not have an attorney listed in online court records and could not be reached.
Sherrick was sentenced in 2017 to one year in a probationary program that, if completed, would allow him to have his record expunged of a 2016 impaired driving offense. Probation officers have repeatedly sought to revoke his participation in the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, according to online court records.
