Bethany United Methodist Church is located at 2415 Laveen St., Latrobe.

A dinner Sunday at a Latrobe church will show appreciation for and benefit the city’s police department and one of its companies of volunteer firefighters.

The event is open to the public and set for 11:45 a.m., following the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2415 Laveen St., Latrobe.

In addition to the police department, money raised at the event will benefit Latrobe Fire Department’s Good Friends Hose Company No. 5, which is stationed not far from the church, on Avenue A.

The cost is $8 per person — save for members of the two departments and their families, who will not be charged for the meal.

“It’s terrific of them to do it,” Latrobe Police Chief John Sleasman said of the church, adding, “We’re really close to having enough money to buy an Intoxilyzer for the department. One more good donation, and we can order that.”

The portable unit, which would make it more convenient to measure the alcohol level of a drunken driving suspect’s breath, costs close to $10,000, the chief said.

Sleasman also wants to equip city police officers with body cameras and update cameras and computers in patrol vehicles.

The church office can be reached at 724-539-2259.
