A July scene of work on Route 119 northbound in Youngwood.

A traffic shift is slated to occur this week on Youngwood’s Third Street as work continues on reconstruction of Route 119 through the borough.

Third Street normally carries two lanes of traffic headed north on Route 119, but the right lane has been closed for the reconstruction project.

According to PennDOT, this week the traffic restriction will shift to the left lane, where crews will perform drainage work on a section of the road stretching from Hillis Street north to Stout’s Discount Carpet. That work, which is dependent on favorable weather, is expected to continue into the spring.

Reconstruction of the southbound lanes, on Fourth Street, is expected to begin later in 2022 and to conclude by the end of 2023, PennDOT officials have said.

The reconstructed lanes will include “chicanes,” slight curves in the roadway that will force traffic from right to left and are meant to slow down motorists. Adjacent sidewalks will be updated, incorporating manholes that have contributed to a rough ride in the travel lanes.

Golden Triangle Construction is the general contractor for the $24.1 million project.
