Jeannette City School District directors this week approved a $2.04 million agreement for the first two phases of renovations at McKee Elementary School.

The first phase of improvements is set to start in June at the building that houses students in kindergarten through sixth grade, said Superintendent Matt Jones.

Directors approved the agreement with McClure Co.

The first phase, which will be completed over the summer, will consist of improvements to the facade at the elementary school entrance, according to the contract. The existing awning will be replaced with a much larger one and additional doors will be added for security purposes.

The second phase, expected to begin after school is over in 2027, will involve replacing the original boilers and renovating the boiler room, according to the contract.

A third phase, which was not part of the contract, is expected to start the following summer and consist of work to the middle school entrance and an unused wood shop.

Officials have said all of the work will improve energy savings, safety and aesthetics at the building that was opened in the mid-1990s.
