Lola Barton is grateful the Jeannette Salvation Army offers a Back-to-School Bash where families can come and collect items necessary for their children to start the school year.

“It’s great because there are so many kids that need stuff and they don’t have it,” said Barton, of Jeannette. “And to find a place that will give them what they need, and the parents don’t have to worry about going out and buying it on their own. It’s a great event. It’s very nice.”

About 50 people registered for Saturday’s event, which took place at the Clay Avenue facility, said Major Jim Brown, who is also pastor at the Jeannette Salvation Army.

According to Brown, the event is a way for area children to stock up on backpacks and other school supplies. During the event, a uniform exchange took place for students who have to wear a uniform to school. Parents were able to choose new sizes and turn in their child’s old uniform.

Donated clothing was available for students who don’t need to wear uniforms, as well as winter coats, gloves and hats.

The event also offered children activities including board games, cornhole and coloring pages. Children also were given a free lunch.

“It’s just a way that we can help our community for back to school,” Brown said.

The event is open to students living in Jeannette, Grapeville, Harrison City, Penn Borough and Claridge. There are no income guidelines, but participants must show proof of their address.

Leann Hickman of Penn Township said she found out about the event after officials at Penn-Trafford sent out a flyer.

She attended the back-to-school bash with her husband, Justin Hickman, daughter Arabella, 6, and sons Justin Jr., 11, Thiago, 9, and Lincoln, 3.

“They’re having fun with the games and stuff, but they also come and get book bags, so that’s nice,” Leann Hickman said. “And they have face masks that they’re passing out, too.”

Sean McLaughlin of Jeannette, who was at the event with his 8-year-old daughter, Chloe, said they have attended similar events hosted by the Jeannette Salvation Army in the past.

“They go out of their way for everybody,” McLaughlin said of the organization.

Brown noted that all of the items offered during the event were donated from various people and businesses, including Eastern Gas Transmission & Storage and the Jeannette Business Association.

“We just appreciate all the help that we’ve had and appreciate everyone that’s come out and shown up today to make this event a success,” Brown said. “We hope the kids have a good school year.”
