Westbound motorists looking to leave Interstate 70 at the Yukon exit will have to jump off earlier, at the neighboring Madison exit, when reconstruction of the Yukon off-ramp begins Monday .
The ramp in South Huntingdon is slated to close at 12:01 a.m. and is expected to remain closed through Nov. 27. Travelers exiting at Madison will be detoured along Borough Line Road, Waltz Mill Road and Wyano-Huntingdon Road.
The work is part of a nearly $93 million project meant to improve the I-70 interchanges at the Yukon and Madison exits while widening the existing lanes of the interstate and adding an auxiliary lane in each direction between the two exits.
Widening of the lanes, each to a new 12-foot standard, will continue east of Madison, to a bridge that carries I-70 over Hunker-Waltz Mill Road.
Crews have completed extension of a box culvert on the western end of the project, according to PennDOT District 12 press officer Jay Ofsanik. He said construction is continuing on bridges that carry I-70 over the roads, Sewickley Creek and a tributary to Sewickley Creek.
Work also is underway on a culvert that will be associated with the revamped Yukon exit ramps, along with embankment construction on the north side of the interstate.
The overall project spans about 4 miles, crossing into Sewickley and Hempfield townships.
The size of the Yukon interchange will be expanded, so the on- and off-ramps can be lengthened.
Multiple roundabouts are planned at the Madison interchange, tying together several roads and providing access to the Commerce Crossing industrial park.
