Hunker to celebrate 90th anniversary with picnic, movie in the park

It’s been 90 years since Hunker made its mark on the map, and borough officials and community members are ready to celebrate.

On Saturday, a 90th anniversary celebration will be hosted from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Hunker Community Building. The event will feature games, face painting, a DJ and karaoke, Chinese auctions and a 50/50 raffle. The night will end with a movie in the park.

Food will be served starting at 4 p.m. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a covered dish, but hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and desserts will be provided.

“I’m proud that a town this small has been able to be self-sufficient and remain our own borough for a period of 90 years,” said borough secretary and treasurer Sue Shaler. “There’s been times that we’ve struggled, but we’re pleased that we’ve been able to maintain our own individuality and be our own borough for that period of 90 years.”

Shaler, 65, was born in Hunker and has lived there for 30 years.

“Hunker’s a nice small community, our population’s around 300 and a lot of times we get referred to as Mayberry,” she said. “So those of you that are old enough to know ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and the town of Mayberry, that’s what Hunker’s like. Everybody’s friendly, willing to help each other.”

Nestled between New Stanton and Ruffs Dale, Hunker started when feed mill owner Frederick Hunker donated ground for the Pennsylvania Railroad right of way. The station and post office were eventually named in honor of him, and as industry and homes were built up, the area eventually became known as Hunker.

Today, the post office is still standing, along with St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, B&P Quality Meats and the Hunker Volunteer Fire Department.

According to the census, the borough has a population of just over 310 people.

In 2004 the borough celebrated its 75th anniversary with gospel music, a performance by Darlene’s Dance School, magician Tom Smith and a fireworks show.
