Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling’s recycling center is located on Innovation Lane, off Route 30 in Unity Township.

Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling will host a household hazardous waste collection June 29 at its Unity recycling center.

ECS&R, a hazardous waste contractor from Crawford County, is conducting the event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 113 Innovative Lane, just off Route 30.

Contact ECS&R at 1-866-815-0016 for pricing information and required pre-registration. Participants will be charged a fee of 85 cents per pound. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card, or a check payable to ECS&R.

Members of Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling will receive a discount of 10 cents per pound. ECS&R will charge an extra fee for items containing mercury, such as thermometers and thermostats, but will not accept loose mercury.

The collection is intended to help area residents properly dispose of items in basements, garages, garden sheds and laundry rooms that typically are marked “toxic,” “hazardous” or “dispose according to local waste regulations.”

All paints will be accepted, including lacquers and latex, oil-based and alkyd paints. Other materials that may be disposed of include mineral spirits, thinners, other solvents, aerosol cans, automotive fluids, degreasers, drain cleaners, fertilizers, old gasoline and fuel mixes, insecticides, pesticides, pool chemicals, metal polishes, old chemistry sets and wood preservatives.

Items that will not be accepted include electronics, appliances containing Freon, explosives, ammunition, radioactive waste, medicines or medical waste, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers or any substance regulated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Call Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling at 724-879-4020 or visit westmorelandcleanways.org for information on other recycling opportunities.
