Holiday gifts, fine art available at Greensburg Art Center sale
Take it from a member artist — Greensburg Art Center’s annual holiday show and sale is worth a visit.
“It’s the best one we’ve ever had,” says Tom Niggel of Greensburg.
“The Art of GIFTing” opened Saturday with an informal reception and runs through Dec. 21 at the center, 230 Todd School Road, Hempfield.
Work from more than 20 area artists is represented in a variety of media, including wall art, pottery, sculpture, fabric art, costume and fine jewelry and more. Holiday and winter-themed items range from rustic snowmen painted on wood to delicately crafted pysanky eggs.
A selection of greeting cards features images of original works by member artists.
“Everything here is handmade and original; even the fabric arts are hand-woven, knitted or crocheted,” says chairperson Debra King. “We have hand-dyed and painted silks.
“The prices are extremely reasonable for handmade pieces,” she adds.
Buyers who have shopped previous sales should take note that new artists have been added this year. New merchandise is brought out as pieces are sold.
The 2020 sale carries special significance for participating artists, King says, whose practices and income have been negatively affected this year by canceled shows and exhibitions.
“During covid, so many artists were at home still making art,” she said. “For them it was a matter of survival and mental health.”
Some, like award-winning painter Sue Pollins of Greensburg, ventured outside of their preferred mediums.
“She spent hours and hours hand-knitting dish cloths,” King said, which are available at the show.
The center is offering a weekly scavenger hunt for a chance to win gift certificates toward holiday sale purchases.
Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, with extended hours until 8 p.m. Thursdays, and 1-4 p.m. Saturdays.
