Eight sandwich options, pepperoni rolls and two daily soup options are on the menu at Henry’s Hoagies in downtown Greensburg.

There’s a new grab-and-go lunch option in downtown Greensburg.

Henry’s Hoagies opened March 2 in the downstairs space at 16 W. Second St.

For now, the food service is all takeout, offering eight sandwich options, four varieties of pepperoni rolls, two daily soups, snacks, fresh fruit, yogurt and bottled drinks.

Owners Henry Johnson and Holly Hull hope to add indoor dining when pandemic restrictions ease.

The Greensburg couple is new to the restaurant business, but not strangers to preparing food for others to enjoy.

They honed their hoagie-making skills by supplying party eats to their friends and families. They also cook for family holiday dinners.

During the pandemic, they also tried their hands at takeout by packaging those dinners for relatives to pick up and take home.

“Everybody liked (our hoagies) so much that we thought we’d open a shop,” Hull said.

“It’s just us,” Johnson said. “You’ll see the same faces every time you come in.”

Johnson formerly worked as a butcher, and Hull has worked as a server.

Prior to devoting themselves to the hoagie shop, he was working in a business that buys and sells cars. She was a billing specialist for a Pittsburgh medical practice.

Ring bell for service

They offer traditional hoagie fixings on a 9-inch roll, including Italian, ham, turkey, ham and turkey, roast beef and bacon-lettuce-tomato, along with the Henry’s DLX, piled high with ham, turkey, bacon and hot pepper cheese. A vegetarian sandwich is coming soon.

Sandwich prices range from $5 to $7.

Soup options are rotated throughout the week, with selections including chicken noodle, vegetable, ham and bean, stuffed pepper, bacon potato, broccoli cheddar and pasta fagioli.

For an extra $1.50, chips and a soda can be added to either soup or sandwich to make a combo meal.

Their breads, sandwich fillings and soups are sourced from local suppliers. The meats, bread and produce are sliced fresh every day.

Because the restaurant sits at the bottom of a flight of stairs, the couple added a bell outside at street level that can be rung for curbside ordering and delivery.

They chose the space more than a year ago, noting that lunchtime traffic could come from college students, the Westmoreland County Courthouse and nearby senior citizen housing.

“We heard that it had been empty for a few years,” Hull said. “We wanted to bring it back to life.”

“We thought about the college kids for the prices,” Johnson said.

Renovations and subsequent opening were delayed by the pandemic.

The couple brightened the space with fresh paint and built wooden shelving and counters. Vintage photos of Greensburg adorn one wall, along with a portrait of Johnson’s great-grandfather, also named Henry Johnson.

“We couldn’t have picked a better location. The shops around us have been our biggest promoters,” Hull said.

Current hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, although the couple is considering adding Saturday hours due to interest expressed by customers.
