For the first time since the covid-19 pandemic, the Hempfield Area School District is hosting a prom for area senior citizens.

The 22nd annual senior citizens prom is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hempfield Area High School Field House.

“This is the first time since the pandemic and we are so happy to have it back,” said Natalie Fetterman, event organizer and freshman seminar teacher at the high school.

The three-hour event will feature a buffet dinner, dancing, entertainment and door prizes. The high school jazz band will also perform, Fetterman said.

The prom is open to Hempfield residents who are 65 years or older.

According to Fetterman, a group of students are involved in planning the event. The students will help with event setup, and will complete other tasks throughout the day Saturday.

Fetterman said the event has been well received within the community.

“Those attending seem very positive and (are) thrilled to be attending once again,” Fetterman said.

The last time the senior citizens prom was held was in 2019. The event has been held for decades, originally a semi-formal event held in Hempfield Area High School’s cafeteria. Over the years, the event has been a second chance for area seniors who may not have attended their own prom, while also allowing attendees to relive their high school days.

Today, the prom attracts between 200 and 300 people each year.

“We are just so happy to have this event and we are looking forward to (seeing) them all,” Fetterman said.

Questions regarding the event can be directed to Fetterman at 724-834-9000, extension 2658.
