Two Hempfield Area High School seniors received the surprise of a lifetime — a full ride to Saint Vincent College in Unity.

On Tuesday, Nolan Fraicola and Sarah Kudrick were surrounded by balloons when Saint Vincent Dean of Admissions Heather Kabala and Associate Director of Admissions Christina Andrae presented them with oversized checks that read “Priceless” in the money field.

The scholarship covers tuition for four years at the school, valued at more than a $138,000.

Competing against 220 applicants, Fraicola and Kudrick placed in the top five of the Wimmer Scholarship Competition. To qualify for the money, students must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average and 1080 SAT score, as well as participate in a written exam given by the college each November.

Fraicola plans on attending the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Science, Mathematics and Computing to study math. At Hempfield, Fraicola is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and works as a physics tutor. He also plays the guitar and saxophone.

Kudrick plans on attended the Boyer School where she will major in computer science. At Hempfield, she is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. Kudrick is also a member of the Hempfield Mathletes and the Speech and Debate Club, and has participated in the Hempfield Enrichment Program competitions and the Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition.
