The Hempfield Area School District is investigating after a person claiming to be a student was picked up by a school bus Wednesday morning and dropped off at the high school.

According to information sent to parents, the driver of bus 65 received permission from the bus garage to pick up the person who was walking on Route 136.

After arriving at the high school, the person got off the bus and left school grounds. School police investigated to ensure the person was no longer on school grounds.

Officials didn’t release more information about the person. Hempfield contracts with First Student to provide bus transportation for students.

“While it was our driver’s intent to help a student that may have missed their bus, the driver did not follow our established pickup procedures,” said Jay Brock, a spokesman for First Student. “The driver will be immediately retrained on proper procedures in conjunction with our ongoing internal investigation.”

Hempfield noted that they are continuing to investigate the situation “to assure that this does not occur again and to ensure the safety of all students.”
