Hempfield supervisors are looking to create a nonprofit organization that would assist with funding for the township’s fire department.

Supervisors are expected to take the first steps in creating the Hempfield Township Fire Relief Association, which will be a charitable wing to support the volunteer fire service.

“A nonprofit corporation is what the township is going to start in order to provide a relief association to support the volunteer fire activities that occur in Hempfield Township,” said township Solicitor Scott Avolio. “A volunteer relief association may solicit or receive gifts in contributions.”

Hempfield became involved in the fire service last year when they worked to make the township’s 12 stations fall under one department. Prior to that each station was considered its own department. Service agreements signed by each station lay out regulations that must be met to receive funding from the township.

During Monday’s supervisors meeting, officials are expected to vote on the creation of the association. After that, supervisors will create bylaws depicting members and trustees of the association and how officials will go about receiving donations.
