Hempfield residents wanting to dispose of tires, household trash and scrap metal soon will have the chance to do so during a cleanup day this month.

Scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon April 23, Hempfield Clean-Up Day will provide two locations across the township — the municipal building, 1132 Woodward Dr., and Hempfield Park, 220 Forbes Trail Rd. — where residents can drop off various unwanted items.

“This is our first organized event here in many years, so we don’t want to oversell, but at the same time we want to make sure we provide multiple opportunities across the township,” Aaron Siko, director of parks and recreation, said during a supervisors meeting last month.

“So we felt the municipal building as the central location for that was good for the entire community, especially with those bigger items.”

Accepted items include household trash, passenger truck and car tires, scrap metal and approved plastics. Included in approved plastics are Type 1 and 2 plastics — which include things such as drink bottles, milk jugs, shampoo and laundry detergent bottles, among others — as well as cardboard, paper and glass bottles.

Yard waste also will be collected at both locations during the event, said township Manager Jason Winters.

Items that are not accepted include household hazardous chemicals and electronic waste.

Township officials noted that year-round household hazardous waste collection is provided by County Hauling.

The program picks up various hazardous waste materials as well as electronic and Freon waste.

During the cleanup day, township staff will be available to help unload waste. The event is free for residents.

Several other cleanup days also are scheduled for specific parts of the township over the next few months.

A cleanup of Hempfield Park is scheduled for April 24 in partnership with United Way.

“We are looking for community groups, organizations and clubs that are interested in partnering with the township for supplies and materials to do road cleanups throughout our very large township,” Siko said.

“We’re going to provide assistance through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and the Pick Up PA program.”

Those interested in organizing a cleanup event can contact the township at 724-834-7232 or at info@hempfieldtwp.org.
