Hempfield Area School District students may receive their first dose of the covid-19 vaccine during a clinic Tuesday at the high school field house. Other clinics are planned this month for students across the region.

Shots of the Pfizer vaccine will be administered from 3 to 7 p.m. in Hempfield through cooperation with Rite Aid. The clinic is open to anyone 16 and older, including adults living in the community.

“While vaccinations are now more readily available, we are supporting this opportunity on school property as it makes it more convenient for any eligible (16 and older) and interested students,” Superintendent Tammy Wolicki said.

Similar events are planned for residents 16 and older, including May 11 for residents in the North Hills School District; May 12 at Plum’s Oblock Junior High School that is open to Plum, Oakmont and Verona residents; and May 14 at Norwin High School.

Vaccine clinics opened to all Pennsylvanians in April. Since then, more than 107,440 people in Westmoreland County have received two vaccine doses and almost 46,240 people have received one dose, according to data from the state Department of Health.

In Allegheny County, 430,585 people have received both doses of the covid-19 vaccine, while more than 245,230 people have received one dose, data show.

Registration for Hempfield’s clinic is not required; however, those interested are asked to complete a survey on the district’s website indicating how many people plan to receive the vaccine. Students also are required to fill out a consent form that is signed by their legal guardian.

Second doses are scheduled for May 25.

“The administration of vaccinations helps to reduce the spread in our community, which impacts the operation of schools,” Wolicki said.
