Greensburg VFW hosts Veterans Day ceremony
Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 33 gathered Monday to honor their own and thank veterans from around the country.
Veterans Day recognizes the collective efforts of every soldier who has served the United States — in times of war and peace, from the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror, said Post Commander David Cackowski.
“Collectively, all these efforts contributed in some way to the increased efficiency of our armed forces as they operate today,” he said.
The ceremony was held at the post’s headquarters on East Pittsburgh Street in Greensburg.
State Rep. Eric Nelson, R-Hempfield, a Marine veteran, attended in uniform, and state Sen. Kim Ward, R-Hempfield, spoke.
“I’ve noticed an increase in patriotism in this country,” Ward said. “I hear it all over, in places I would never even think to hear it.”
Cackowski took a moment to honor VFW Post 33’s longtime Quartermaster Jim Findle, who died in January at the age of 85.
“Without his efforts, I’m not sure we would have survived here at this location,” he said.
Members of Westmoreland County Young Marines gave speeches about the importance of Veterans Day.
The ceremony concluded with members of the VFW Honor Guard giving a three-volley salute, followed by the playing of taps.
