Wayward Whiskers, a Greensburg animal rescue, is hosting a Kitten Shower to raise supplies and monetary donations for incoming kittens.

It’s a … kitten?

Wayward Whiskers, a Greensburg animal rescue, is hosting a fundraiser based around popular baby shower games and activities as a way to accept donations and introduce foster kittens to the public.

“This time of year is often very challenging, known as ‘kitten season,’ due to the booming amount of unwanted kittens being born,” said Katelynn Jones, president and founder of the nonprofit. “Local animal rescues and shelters are very overburdened, with not only the overwhelming amount of kittens and the constant calls for placement, but also the financial need of the increase number of kitten intakes for supplies needed for everyday care and veterinary care.”

To get into the event, donations like Purina Kitten Chow, Purina One Healthy Kitten, Friskies and Fancy Feast canned food will be accepted at the door, or a $10 admission fee.

The goal, Jones said, is to fill a kitten playpen full of supplies and to spread awareness about spaying and neutering cats, one of the missions of the shelter.

The June 9 event will offer a light buffet lunch including “Meowosas,” with the band “Cheers” playing in the background, along with a kitten selfie station, basket raffle, coloring sheets for children and the opportunity to meet adoptable kittens.

With 50 kittens and more than 200 cats available for adoption at Wayward Whiskers, attendees will have to chance to interact with and adopt kittens. A spotlight adoptable cat reel featuring adult cats will be presented.

The nonprofit hosted the event in 2016 at Levin’s Furniture, “where we had overwhelming support with over 100 items donated. This year, the reaction from the community has been supportive,” Jones said. “Since our organization has been actively involved in our area assisting with local cats and kittens, members of our community understand that in order to continue our mission we need their support.”

This year’s event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the South Greensburg Fire Hall. More information can be found on the organization’s Facebook page or by calling 724-610-9646.
