Greensburg’s recreation department is initiating a holiday decorating contest for residents, with entries due by 4 p.m. next Friday, Dec. 16.

“If you live in the city, you can send in a picture of your house or apartment that you have decorated,” said Lydia Kinkaid, recreation program manager.

Photos of the entrant’s house, yard or window display may be emailed to rec@greensburgpa.org or submitted via message to the department’s Facebook page. The entrant’s name, street address, phone number and email address should be included.

The photos will be posted on the Facebook page for public viewing and voting between 8 a.m. Dec. 18 and 4 p.m. Dec. 22. The photo that receives the most “likes” will win the contest.

“We’ll include the addresses, but not the names, in case somebody wants to drive by and see the lights,” Kinkaid said.

Kinkaid said the contest was inspired by a similar program in White Oak.

“They did this for Halloween, and I thought it was cute,” she said.

The winner will be announced at noon Dec. 23. The winner will receive a bundle of passes for recreational opportunities in the city: golfing at the Mt. Odin Golf Course, ice skating at the Kirk S. Nevin Arena and swimming at Veterans Memorial Pool.

Write to Santa

The recreation department also is accepting submissions of children’s letters to Santa through Dec. 18.

Kinkaid said they can be dropped in a red mailbox at the recreation office window in the Nevin Arena or mailed to “Letters from Santa,” 520 New Alexandria Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.

The child’s name and mailing address must be included to receive a letter in response.
