Greensburg police warn of Social Security scam
Greensburg Police warned residents to beware of identity theft scammers pretending to be from the Social Security Administration.
Several residents called the police recently regarding these scam calls, the department posted on Facebook.
The scammers ask their targets for personal information like dates of birth and Social Security numbers, threatening to cut off Social Security benefits if their victims don’t comply.
The scammers are able to “spoof” phone numbers to make it look like they’re calling from a legitimate government office, police said.
Official agencies will never ask for sensitive personal information over the phone, the department said.
The best response to this type of call is to hang up the phone.
Police also asked residents to tell friends and relatives who might be targeted about the scam.
