Greensburg Police Department seeks new officer

The City of Greensburg Police Department is looking for a new officer.

The department is accepting applications for candidates to replace patrolman Peter Sandberg, who retired in October after 21 years on the force.

It’s getting harder to find qualified candidates, Chief Chad Zucco said.

“The problem that we have now is recruitment, and getting people to take the test,” he said. “Nobody wants to do this job.”

When he applied in 1998 he was one of about 150 candidates. Last time the department looked for an officer, there were less than half that many applicants, he said.

Applicants must have police academy certification, a high school diploma or GED certificate, and be at least 21 years old. Those interested must pick up an application packet from the station during normal business hours and pay a $50 fee.

The department will accept applications through Feb. 14.

Applicants will go through a multi-stage screening process. It starts with a written exam on Feb. 29, followed by a physical agility test, interview, and psychological and medical examinations.
