Greensburg Fire Department to host milk giveaway
Need milk? Schneider’s Dairy, the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department and the American Dairy Association North East have a truckload to give away.
The organizations will host a drive-through milk giveaway Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Robert F. Nicely Elementary School in Greensburg.
There will be a tractor-trailer filled with milk, and anyone who shows up will get two gallons free of charge, said fire department president Rick Steele.
“It’s open to anybody, if you need the milk come out,” Steele said.
Drivers and passengers will remain in their vehicles as volunteers put the milk in their trunk. Registration is not required.
The coronavirus-related shutdowns of restaurants and schools have driven down demand for milk and other dairy products, according to Dairy Farmers of America.
Dairies across the country have been giving away hundreds of thousands of gallons, a way to help those in need during the shutdown while putting all that surplus milk to good use.
The American Dairy Association North East has helped give away more than 200,000 gallons in the past two months, and plans to give away 1 million more by the end of the year, according to the organization.
