Guidance counselor Carla Burke from Greensburg Central Catholic places a sign in the yard of graduating senior Andrew Daoud on Thursday, May 21, 2020, in Hempfield.

More than 60 Greensburg Central Catholic seniors on Thursday received signs, caps and gowns and other congratulatory items from teachers and staff.

School officials delivered the items to the seniors’ homes, titling the project #drivinmiles4seniorSMILES.

The event followed an April announcement that graduation was postponed until July 21. A backup date is scheduled for Aug. 12. If a traditional graduation is unable to be held, “we will celebrate in an alternative fashion,” Principal Benjamin Althof wrote in an April 13 letter.

Other activities, such as sporting events and prom, were canceled after the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of schools across the state.
