Republican senatorial candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz on Thursday will take his campaign to the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center in New Stanton, where educators are expected to discuss the importance of supporting technical education and its role in meeting the region’s need for skilled labor.

Oz, along with state and local officials and representatives from U.S. Steel Corp., Hamill Manufacturing Co. of Penn Township and Basic Carbide Corp. of Lowber, have been invited to tour the facility, said Jason Lucia, administrator at Central Westmoreland CTC. Westmoreland County commissioners and the county’s state legislative delegation also have been invited to the two-hour event, Lucia said.

The tour of the career and technology center will occur a day before former President Trump is scheduled to join Oz at a rally as the Westmoreland Fairgrounds near Norvelt.

Central Westmoreland CTC officials want to hear how candidates would support career and technology centers in their quest for financial support from state and federal governments, Lucia said.

Oz is one of seven Republican candidates seeking the GOP nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in the May 17 primary.

Central Westmoreland CTC is nonpolitical, Lucia said, and would welcome Democratic candidates on a similar tour. Oz has toured other career and technology centers in the state, Lucia said.
