In 2015, blue ribbons were tied to tree branches at New Florence’s Memory Park in honor of St. Clair Township Police Officer Lloyd E. Reed Jr. after Reed was fatally shot on Nov. 28 of that year while responding to a domestic call in New Florence.

More than $71,000 in money from impact fees levied on Pennsylvania’s unconventional natural gas wells will be used to make improvements to Memory Park in New Florence.

“The sidewalks are old. They’re heaving very badly and creating a tripping hazard,” said borough council President Jason Beatty.

The borough will pay a little more than $10,000 that will be added to more than $71,000 from the Pennsylvania’s Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program that distributes money collected from impact fees on fracking wells.

It may take until next year to finish the improvements because plans need to be finalized, Beatty said.

Dedicated in 1986, Memory Park is located on the site of a former school at the intersection of Seventh and North Main streets near the New Florence Community Library.
