Fireworks over New Stanton planned to 'boost community morale'
New Stanton residents will be treated to a fireworks show this weekend in an effort to “boost community morale,” borough council President Ray Strosko said.
The event, scheduled for Saturday at 8:45 p.m., will be hosted by Schaefer Fireworks, which is staging the display from a “good vantage point” so people should be able to see from their yards, said Kimmel Schaefer. Residents are encouraged to watch from their homes.
“Although it may not feel like we have much to celebrate being in the midst of the pandemic, council felt that this was a wonderful opportunity to boost community morale and to thank our residents for their sacrifices and patience as together we work to slow the spread of the virus,” Strosko said in a news release.
Larger events across the county have been canceled to keep large crowds from gathering including Latrobe’s annual fireworks show. The Fourth of July event normally stretches over several days and includes a parade, midway attractions, a Miss Fourth of July pageant, musical entertainment and other activities.
The annual Kecksburg UFO Festival slated for July 24-26 was canceled due to the pandemic. The event draws about 5,000 people over three days and includes a community parade. The event is scheduled to resume next year.
The Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival scheduled for July 2-5 at Twin Lakes Park was canceled. Organizers of the event cited concerns for vendors.
For New Stanton Mayor Ron Echard, hosting the event is a way to help community members.
“I think the residents will really enjoy the show,” he said. “There will be a great grand finale. This will be another opportunity to raise the spirits of the community.”
Sunday is the rain date for the event.
