Fire destroys Greensburg house, damages neighboring one

A state police fire marshal and Greensburg fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire in the city early Saturday that destroyed a two-story house and damaged a second home.

Four occupants of the two homes were displaced as a result of the blaze. It was reported just before 3 a.m. on Marsh Street in the vicinity of Greensburg’s train station, said city fire Chief Tom Bell. No injuries were reported.

“When we got there the fire was already really going pretty good on the Harrison Avenue side,” Bell said. “The fire then spread very quickly to the interior of the first and second floors.”

Bell confirmed that, as of 8 a.m. Saturday morning, fire investigators were still sifting through debris on the residence’s exterior to determine where and how the fire started.

“It was destroyed. We really had to deal with some pretty bad hoarding conditions inside that made it really difficult,” Bell said.

“Thank God no one was hurt. All of the occupants and the firefighters were able to walk away OK.”

Bell said at one point the fire became so intense he had firefighters come out from inside the structure.

He said the fire spread to a second residence in an adjacent alley, but fighters were able to limit the damage to that residence.

Multiple area departments assisted at the scene. The name of the homeowner was not disclosed.

A damage estimate was not available.
