There are plenty of job openings in the local economy right now, but Vangura Surfacing Products in North Huntingdon doesn’t really have many positions open for an applicant without opposable thumbs.

So when a fawn wandered through an open bay door Friday morning, shop supervisor Russell Shirley knew it wasn’t stopping in for a job.

“It was about 6:30 a.m., and I’d opened up some of the garage doors because it was a little warm in the shop,” Shirley said. “Then, out of my eye, I saw something come in one of the doors.”

With Vangura’s property backing up to woods on two of four sides, Shirley has seen plenty of animals hanging around during his 35 years with the company.

“We’ve had some foxes come around before, but none of them have wandered into the shop,” he said. “I took a walk over to see what it was, and heard it bleating for its mom.”

Shirley was able to walk right over and pick the fawn up without too much trouble, he said.

“He looked a little scared at first, but once I picked him, he was pretty calm,” he said.

After a couple photos, Shirley took the fawn back outside.

“He turned around at first, and it looked like he was going to come back in, but eventually he headed back out toward the woods.”

Shirey said the fawn took a brief, five-minute tour of the Vangura shop.

“I didn’t want him to stay too long,” he said. “I know the mothers leave them for a while, but they always come back. After a few minutes, he ran back across the field into the higher weeds.”
