Veterans and military service members in the agriculture industry can get a view of the farming business on June 12 at the Veteran Farming Workshop in Unity.

The Pennsylvania Veterans Farm Project is sponsoring its first farm workshop in Westmoreland County from 9 a.m. to noon at Ralph and Ann Frye’s farm on Pleasant Lane, said Mimi Brooker, director of the Veterans Farm Project. The third-generation family dairy farm features The Creamery, an artisan cheese facility.

The workshop is geared toward those who have been farming 10 years or less, but all are welcome.

Participants will take a field walk to see best management practices installed with technical and financial assistance from Natural Resources Conservation Service, in addition to speakers on grants, honey production, and U.S. Department of Agriculture programming for beginning and established farmers.

“We have found there is a very real need for this,” Brooker said of the workshop.

Attendance is limited to 20 people. Masks and social distancing will be required.

The organization will charge a $5 fee for the workshop.
