Export officials prepare for road construction season
Road construction season is just around the corner, and Export officials are lining up projects they want to address in the coming months.
Mayor Joe Zaccagnini said he is waiting on Peoples Natural Gas officials to finish restoring parts of Roosevelt Street, Dent Avenue, Pierce Street and Lee Avenue after gas line work that took place last year.
Zaccagnini said Peoples needs to finish the work in order to comply with the borough’s street opening ordinance, whih was updatedrestoration of borough roads after utility work is complete.
Peoples spokesperson Nicholas Paradise said the company is working to schedule work dates.
Borough officials also are looking toward the next round of projects that could be funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. Council President Barry Delissio said the two major items under consideration are sewer work along Buchanan Street, and several improvements along Italy Road.
“With Italy Road, we’re waiting to see if we get into PennDOT’s Turnback Program,” Delissio said. “That project will go much easier if that happens.”
The Turnback Program would give the road — officially owned by PennDOT since 1931 — back to the borough. Export officials would pay for engineering to determine what updates the road needs, and PennDOT would fund those improvements and pay the borough $4,000 per mile in annual maintenance.
Delissio said he is also looking at projects that would piggyback on the paving program run by Export’s neighbors in Murrysville. He said sections of Truman Street and Henry Avenue were being considered.
Finally, council opened contract bids for paving work on the northern side of the borough parking lot at its recent meeting.
They were (lowest to highest):
• Dun Rite Construction, Tarentum, $270,578
• Tresco, Plum, $292,741
• Derry Construction, Derry, $294,215
• Nagy Construction & Asphalt Paving, Plum, $295,895
• El Grande, Donora, $357,130.
The borough’s engineer will review the bids and prepare a bid tabulation to bring back to council at its April meeting.
