Traffic is being detoured on Chaintown Road in East Huntingdon this week, as PennDOT road crews begin the first of three in-house bridge improvement projects this construction season.
Others are planned beginning in July in Ligonier Township, and in September in Hempfield.
PennDOT hopes by December to complete replacement of the aging East Huntingdon span, which crosses a tributary to Jacobs Creek, west of Scottdale.
A marked detour directs motorists along Nebo Road, Homestead Avenue, Route 3083 and Pittsburgh Street as crews demolish the existing bridge and excavate the site.
Allison Park Contractors will purchase and set in place a new box culvert as part of the $175,000 project.
The project in Ligonier Township will replace a bridge that carries Nature Run Road over Furnace Run, just outside Laurel Mountain Borough.
In Hempfield, crews will rehabilitate the bridge that carries Route 136 over Little Sewickley Creek near the village of Darragh.
PennDOT District 12’s in-house bridge program has been in place for about a decade, with maintenance crews in each of the district’s four counties responding to make emergency repairs as well as planned major improvements to bridges that need attention.
