Emergency crews were preparing to fly a truck driver to a trauma center for treatment after his rig crashed over an embankment Thursday night along Interstate 70 in South Huntingdon.

The eastbound tractor-trailer carrying empty plastic containers overturned as it descended the embankment that separates the interstate from Davis Road, according to a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher. The crash was reported at about 10:30 p.m. near the Route 31 interchange on the interstate

Firefighters freed the driver from the truck cab and set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter at the Route 31 interchange.

Details of the driver’s injuries weren’t immediately available.

Traffic continued to flow in both directions on the interstate.
