The increase in covid cases in four ZIP codes covering most of the North Huntingdon-Irwin-North Irwin areas remained below 10% for the third consecutive week, based on state Department of Health data released Monday.

There was a 7.8% increase in the number of confirmed covid cases in the North Huntingdon-Irwin, Larimer, Ardara and Westmoreland City ZIP codes, from Jan. 4 to Jan. 11, according to the state health department. The confirmed case count rose to 2,287, an increase of 166 from Jan. 4. The total number is a tally of all cases since the pandemic hit the region in March. The increase for the seven-day period ending Jan. 4 was only 5%.

The state figures, however, revealed another double-digit percentage jump of 13.6% in the number of probable, but not confirmed, cases in those communities. The probable case count rose to 923, from 812.

Health officials have been concerned about a post-holiday spike in positive covid cases, but as of yet, that fast rise has not hit the North Huntingdon-Irwin area.

The number of negative tests have risen to 10,090, the first time the negative test results have topped 10,000. There were 9,844 negative test results as of Jan. 4.

In the North Huntingdon-Irwin 15642 ZIP codes, there were 2,203 confirmed covid cases, 901 probable cases and 9,779 cases with negative tests since March.

In the Westmoreland City ZIP code 15692, 57 confirmed cases, 16 probable cases and 188 negative test results.

In the Ardara 15616 ZIP code, there were 14 confirmed cases, 1 probable and 61 negative tests.

In the Larimer 15647 ZIP code, there were 13 confirmed cases, five probable and 62 negative test results.
