A 29-year-old Derry Township man was arrested by state police Monday on multiple criminal charges of physically assaulting an 18-month-old toddler earlier this month.
Jordan Lee Ripingill was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault of a child under 6-years-old, harassment and simple assault filed by state police.
Trooper Shauntai Hall of the Kiski station reported the investigation began after the state’s child abuse hotline, ChildLine, received a telephone tip that the child was being abused.
The caller reported that she observed multiple bruises on the toddler’s face, thighs and back during a visit when she was told by the child’s mother that Ripingill had admitted injuring the child when he picked the boy up by his legs, “dragged him across the floor on his face and threw him forcefully on a bed” while watching him, Hall wrote in court documents.
According to police, the victim’s mother also told the witness that Ripingill did not intend to injure the child, “but said he was high.”
The victim’s regular babysitter corroborated the confidential witness’s story, Hall reported in court documents.
Hall said the multiple injuries to the child were inflicted between March 8 and 11.
Ripingill could not be reached for comment. An attorney was not listed in court dockets.
Ripingill was released on $75,000 unsecured bond pending a preliminary hearing to be scheduled before Bilik.
