People who reside in the City of Greensburg can contact the public works department for curbside pickup of their disposed live Christmas trees.
Residents may call the public works department at 724-838-4344 and leave a message to request pickup of a discarded tree. Trees should be left at the front of the resident’s property, should not be in a bag and should have all lights, ornaments, tree stands and skirts removed, public works director Tom Bell said.
City crews collected an initial batch of 38 trees from city homes, Bell said Monday. He explained the trees are taken to Lynch Field and are fed through a chipper, with the mulch placed in containers before being hauled for recycling by Waste Management.
The tree collection is a yearly service of the city. Bell noted the annual number of trees collected has dwindled in recent years — from about 500 to between 200 and 300.
“It seems like they’re starting to dwindle down,” he said. “Either people are getting rid of them themselves, they’re recycling them through (Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling) or a lot more people are using artificial trees.”
Tree dropoff sites available
Westmoreland Cleanways has partnered with local communities and organizations to offer dropoff tree recycling at 15 locations across Westmoreland County.
