A car rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Route 22 in Salem on Tuesday, June 4, 2019.

State police at Kiski said the driver of a car that crashed into a tractor trailer Tuesday on Route 22 in Salem has died from his injuries at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville.

Trooper Chad W. Howell reported the crash occurred at 4:52 a.m. at the intersection of Route 819 and Route 22. The wreck closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for more than two hours.

The identity of the deceased has not been released by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office.

Howell reported the 45-year-old crash victim’s 2012 Nissan Versa drove into the rear of a 2018 red Mack truck hauling a trailer.

“Upon troopers arrival, the driver of (the Nissan) was entrapped but alert. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Forbes Hospital where he later succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash,” Howell wrote in a news release.

The driver of the tractor trailer complained of minor injuries, but did not require transport to a medical facility, police said.

Howell said the investigation is ongoing.
