A 16-year-old student is accused of setting a paper towel on fire last month in a boys locker room at Greensburg Central Catholic High School. He faces arson and related charges, according to state police.

State police fire marshal Trooper Seth Helman said a month-long investigation determined that the teenager set the 11:30 a.m. April 25 fire at the Hempfield facility.

“Through the investigation, a male juvenile admitted starting the fire,” Helman said.

In addition to arson, the boy is charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, institutional vandalism and criminal mischief, Helman said.

Diocese spokesman Jerry Zufelt said that there was no damage to the locker room.

“A paper towel was burned and it set off a smoke alarm,” Zufelt said.

He said students at the school followed fire evacuation procedures as a result of the alarm.

Zufelt said the student served a 10-day suspension as a result of the incident.
