A Philadelphia man found in Westmoreland County passed out inside a vehicle reeking of marijuana and subsequently charged with drug possession over the weekend was arrested about 12 hours later following an alleged burglary at a local business, state police reported.

Troopers first encountered Naasir N. Boyd, 19, around 9 p.m. Sunday, when he and others were inside an SUV parked on Sewickley Avenue in Herminie, Sewickley Township, according to court documents.

Boyd, who was in the driver’s seat, and several other people were found “intoxicated and passed out” inside a Jeep Liberty, Trooper Thomas Mortimer reported. The vehicle smelled of burned marijuana, but none was located, Mortimer said.

When Boyd exited the vehicle, troopers found he was sitting on a sandwich bag containing suspected Ecstasy and Xanax pills. The other occupants inside the vehicle were not charged. Boyd was cited at the scene but not arrested, per covid-19 pandemic protocols, Mortimer reported.

At 9:45 a.m. Monday, Trooper Zachary Chamblee said he responded to a report of a man “slumped over the wheel of a truck parked at the (Greensburg) Auto Spa,” located on West Pittsburgh Street, Hempfield, about 11 miles away from where Boyd was found the previous night. There was evidence the car wash was burglarized and Boyd had $800 in his right pants pocket, Chamblee reported.

Video surveillance showed Boyd entering the building and removing cash from a container inside the business, Chamblee said. Video also showed Boyd enter a pressure washing truck parked in the lot after the break in, he added.

According to Chamblee, Boyd denied taking money from the business.

Boyd was arraigned on multiple counts of burglary, criminal trespass, illegal possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft and receiving stolen property.

Hempfield District Judge Mark Mansour ordered Boyd held in the county jail on $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled May 29.
