Career, technology students compete in SkillsUSA event

Several Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center students placed at the SkillsUSA State Competition in Hershey in April.

The event, which was held at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center, brought students together from across the state to compete in different skill sets such as computer information science, medical terminology, automotive, health care and more.

Winners will go on to compete nationally.

This year, almost 50 CWCTC students competed at the state level.

Seventeen placed first or second in various competitions, and three others took third place.

Several took second place in chapter business procedure, which requires students to demonstrate knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

Winners include: Charisma Diehl, sophomore at Mt. Pleasant Area Senior High School; Elizabeth Marquez, sophomore at Hempfield Area High School; Gabrielle Hult, sophomore at Greensburg Salem High School; Keara Richey, junior at Hempfield Area; and Jenna Darrell, sophomore at Southmoreland Senior High School.

Several students also took second place in opening/closing ceremonies, where students perform duties together that are associated with opening and closing a meeting.

Winners include: Ryleigh Miller, Alana Jennings and Abigail Giddings, sophomores at Greensburg Salem; Autumn Kline and Ianna Dull, sophomores at Yough Senior High School; Juliana Gilligan, sophomore at Norwin Senior High School; and Emily McClintock, junior at Hempfield Area.

Other award recipients include: Lauryn Winfield, a senior at Jeannette Junior-Senior High School, who took second place in job interviewing

Michael Swab, a senior at Hempfield Area, who took third place in computer programming

Lucas Mulhorn, a senior at Southmoreland, and Caelyn Fourier, a senior at Clairview School, each took third place in web design

Tori White and Wyatt Barnhart, juniors at Mt. Pleasant, took second place in American spirit

David Dougan, a senior at Southmoreland, took second place in cabling

Camryn McMullen-Jones, a sophomore at Norwin, took first place in medical terminology. McMullen-Jones will move on to the national competition in Atlanta from June 20-24.
