2 flown to hospital by helicopter after crash in Derry Township
Two people were flown to the hospital by helicopter with “moderate to severe injuries” following a crash in Derry Township Saturday afternoon, according to Ted Malik, fire chief for the New Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department.
Officials responded to Route 981 about half a mile north of Route 22 around 5:20 p.m. for reports of the crash involving a Volkswagen car and a Harley Davidson motorcycle. On scene, crews worked to set up a landing zone for two medicalhelicopters. Officials with Mutual Aid tended to the patients until they arrived.
According to State Police at the Kiski Valley station, two people riding the motorcycle were flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland. A man had suspected minor injuries and a woman had serious injuries, according to a police report. The driver of the Volkswagen was not injured.

Bradenville and Crabtree Volunteer Fire Departments assisted on scene. According to a post on the Crabtree department’s Facebook page, crews assisted with patient care, fuel spill containment and debris removal.
Traffic along Route 981 was rerouted for about two hours.
State Police at the Kiski Valley station are investigating the incident.
