A man was seriously injured early Monday morning when his pickup truck hit a tree at the Bushy Run Battlefield site in Penn Township, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was freed from the vehicle by Harrison City firefighters using a metal-cutting tool, said Chief John Otto and taken by ambulance to AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where he underwent surgery.

The accident occurred when the driver, traveling eastbound on Bushy Run Road, went off the south berm, steered back toward the road and then went off the north berm, hitting a tree about 10 feet away, Otto said. Another motorist came upon the scene of the accident about 30 seconds after it happened and called Westmoreland 911 at about 12:25 a.m.

“This was a bad crash,” Otto said.

If not for the quick response of the police, firefighters trained in extrication and ambulance personnel who responded to the scene, Otto said the driver would not have survived.
