West Mifflin Area High School students will have a remote learning day Tuesday to learn remotely after a fire ripped through the auditorium.
No injuries were reported in connection with the fire around 5:30 p.m. Monday at 91 Commonwealth Ave.
Allegheny County officials are investigating the cause of the blaze, which is believed to have originated from a lift that was left plugged in to charge overnight.
The machine was owned and operated by an outside contractor and damaged a portion of the auditorium wall and floor, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.
A letter was sent to district families and posted on the district’s Facebook page.
“While the building remains structurally safe, the odor from the fire requires us to temporarily close the building for clean-up and air quality improvements,” Superintendent Jeffrey Soles wrote. “Again, only the high school will be remote. Students are expected to attend classes virtually following their regular schedule. Teachers will provide assignments and links for instruction through Schoology Classroom.”
