A Pittsburgh nonprofit that supports poor and homeless veterans is buying property from the city’s Urban Redevelopment Authority to develop more apartments and activity space in Larimer.

The URA board voted Thursday to sell five lots to Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard for about $20,700.

“We’re really excited to move forward and serve more veterans in the area,” Veterans Place of Washington Boulevard Executive Director Shannon Hagy said.

Veterans Place annually serves more than 500 homeless and at-risk veterans through its veterans resource center, transitional housing program and homeless veteran reintegration program, according to information provided by the URA. The nonprofit provides wraparound services ranging from recovery support and financial management to employment and educational assistance and an onsite foot pantry.

The vacant land the nonprofit is buying sits next to its existing Larimer campus. It plans to build a three-story multipurpose building on the land in a $4.2 million project.

The building will house eight new apartments for homeless or low-income veterans, adding to its existing 48-bed campus, said Bailey Knapp, a project manager with the URA.

The site also will provide space for behavioral services and physical activity, according to information provided by the URA.

No timeline was offered for when the project may be completed.
