A vehicle crashed into a creek outside the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel on the Parkway West Monday.

One person was taken to a hospital after a three-vehicle crash outside the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel Monday morning, according to state police

The crash was reported shortly after 7 a.m.

According to state police, Patrick Totten, 44, of Pittsburgh was driving in the right lane behind Loredo Norales Derickson, 20, of Pittsburgh. Philip Hathaway, 38, of Pittsburgh was traveling in the left lane passing Derickson. All three vehicles were exiting the tunnel.

Police said Trotten rear-ended Derickson, pushing Derickson’s car into the left lane, hitting the side of Hathaway’s SUV. The impact caused Hathaway’s SUV to spin sideways and he lost control. It crossed over the right lane and shoulder, went through a guardrail and over an embankment, overturning and landing on its passenger side in a creek bed.

Hathaway was taken by ambulance to UPMC Mercy Hospital. The severity of his injuries was not stated.

Totten and Derickson were not hurt. A 16-year-old passenger in Derickson’s car was also not hurt, police said.

Outbound traffic was restricted until about 8:30 a.m., PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said. The shoulder remained closed for a flatbed, and the scene was cleared around 9:30 a.m.
