Allegheny Township police are accusing a Vandergrift man of causing a wreck that seriously injured a Leechburg woman.

Brett William Mego, 23, of Sherman Avenue is charged with aggravated assault by vehicle and 13 related offenses in connection with a March 22 wreck along South Leechburg Hill Road in which, police said, he forced the woman’s car off the road, sending it into a ravine.

According to a police report, Mego didn’t have a driver’s license and the Leechburg woman suffered serious injuries that required surgery.

Police said the wreck happened when Mego, driving a Honda Civic, was passing the woman’s Nissan Juke in a no-passing zone. The Civic spun out and bumped into the woman’s SUV.

The Civic was last seen being driven away on West Leechburg Road.

The Juke was forced into a guardrail at the intersection with West Leechburg Road. It continued through a business’ parking l0t, where it stuck another vehicle before rolling down a hillside and across a small creek.

Police said initial reports that the crash involved racing on the road were unfounded.

The woman was taken to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, where she underwent surgery for a broken back and sternum, according to the police report.

The woman’s condition wasn’t available Thursday.

Mego’s preliminary hearing is scheduled May 14 in the offices of District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec in Allegheny Township.
