The Upper Burrell supervisors have paved the way for improvements on three roads this summer.

Supervisors awarded contracts on Wednesday to seal coat Michael Drive and Laing Road and do overlay work on Menk Road, said township engineer Mike Moore of Bankson Engineers.

Work is to be completed by Sept. 15, Moore said.

The township is using state Liquid Fuels Tax money to pay for the projects, he said.

Supervisors awarded a contract of just over $36,000 to Russell Standard Corp. to seal coat the entirety of Michael Drive and Laing Road. Russell’s bid was the lowest of six; Derry Construction, Holbein, Midland Asphalt Materials, Quaker Sales and Youngblood Paving also submitted bids.

Michael Drive runs from Guyer Road to Schafer Drive, and Laing Road goes from Guyer Road to the Lower Burrell city line.

Tresco Paving Corp. won the contract for overlay work on Menk Road. Tresco submitted a $82,740 bid, which was the lowest of 10 bids.

The work on Menk Road would go about a mile south from Route 780, Moore said.

“We’re happy that (the roads) are getting done,” said supervisors Chairman Ross G. Walker III.

Supervisors also awarded road material contracts for the year.

The township awarded a roughly $8,500 contract to Heidelberg Materials Northeast for 360 tons of type 2A limestone. It also awarded two $8,460 contracts to Allegheny Mineral Corp. for 300 tons of No. 2 limestone and 300 tons of anti-skid material.
