Poker run to raise money for homeless veterans

Ride for Homeless Vets Motorcycle Poker Run will be June 9 at Natrona Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars, 894 Veterans Lane.

The run will begin and finish at the post. Race-day check-in will be from 9 a.m. until the opening ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. Kickstands up will be at 11:20 a.m. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served and the Shiners will entertain at 4 p.m. There will be a silent auction, refreshments and a 50-50.

Free lunch offered Wednesday at Allegheny Valley Church of God

Allegheny Valley Church of God, 216 Catalpa St., New Kensington, will serve free lunches at noon Wednesday.

Meatball sandwiches, fries and cookies will be served for as long as the food lasts. Dine in or takeout available. For details, call 724-335-0994.


Leechburg Hall of Fame dinner set for May 19

The annual Leechburg Hall of Fame Dinner will be May 19 at the Marconi Club, 135 River Ave., Leechburg.

A cash bar will be at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 6. This year’s honorees are Doreen Smeal, Darius Lovelace and J.C. Lovelace, posthumously. Tickets are $30 and include dinner and soft drinks.

Today: The Creativity Club at the St. Mary Family Community Center will have a Mother’s Day event for children in prekindergarten through sixth grade at 2 p.m. at the center, 407 Freeport Road. There will be stations to make a Mother’s Day gift, gift bags for finished projects and a chance to win a gift certificate to a local art studio.

Harmar 

Today: A spring bingo to benefit Lower Valley Community Food Bank will be at 7 p.m. at the Acme Club, 230 Herron Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m. Cost: $25, includes six bingo cards for 10 games, snacks and bottled water. Extra cards, and tickets for special games, lottery sure tips, a summer drink bundle and 50-50 raffle will be sold. Bring non-perishable food items for the food bank and receive a free bingo card. Thursday: Cheswick Community Relations Committee will host a ladies night out event “Buyer’s Remorse Extravaganza” from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Blue Haven Lounge, 492 Nixon Road. Bring five gently used items you can’t return but are too good to throw away and go home with three items brought by others. Acceptable items include purses, wallets, gloves, sunglasses, jewelry, makeup bags, scarves and watches. No clothing or shoes please. Remaining items will be donated to women in need. Today: The Diaper Pantry at Christ Our Hope Anglican Church will distribute diapers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 926 Painter Ave., and at Sheldon Park, both in Natrona Heights. Recipients must drive up and remain in their vehicles. First-time recipients must provide their own identification, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card.

May 21: The Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation will present a free seminar, “Scooter the Therapy Cat,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the foundation, One Acee Drive. Dr. Betsy Kay Kennon, a volunteer veterinarian with Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley, will discuss her book and the benefits of pet therapy to humans. Indiana Township

Today: The free Drive-In Movies in the Parks program sponsored by the Allegheny County Parks Department will present “The Super Mario Brothers Movie” at dusk at Hartwood Acres Amphitheater, 4000 Middle Road. Gates open at 7 p.m. The movie is rated PG and guests are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks. Tune your car radio to 87.9 FM for sound.

Kiski Township  

May 18: Kiski Township Volunteer Fire Department will host a spring bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 1037 Route 56. Proceeds will benefit the Back to School Carnival planned for Aug. 24.
