Tarentum will have a new council representative next week.

Four people have applied to fill a vacancy created when council President Scott Dadowski won two seats in the November election and ultimately chose to keep his position representing the 2nd Ward.

He relinquished the at-large council seat, meaning people from any ward can apply for the four-year term.

Borough Manager Dwight Boddorf said council will have a special meeting Tuesday to interview the applicants. It’s open to the public.

“At the end, council will make a decision and appoint the new person,” Boddorf said.

He or she will be sworn in at the regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Boddorf declined to give details about the four applicants.

Council Vice President Lou Ann Homa said she is looking to fill the vacancy with someone who isn’t afraid to ask questions.

Dadowski said no specific job experience is required.

“Just someone that has the best interest of our residents and the goal of continuing to move the borough forward,” he said.

Councilwoman Maggie Smith is new to council, having been elected in November. She said her vote will go to a person with “a sincere interest to put yourself in a position to serve the community as a whole and a desire to work together with existing council members to make the best decisions for all of our community.”

An applicant who is active in the community would be a bonus, Smith said.

“We are a small town, and I believe someone who wants to contribute to its growth would be ideal,” she said. “We’re looking for someone who stands behind our borough and wants to continue the momentum that has started.”
