The 200 block of Conroy Way in Tarentum on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020. An 18-year-old man died and a 19-year-old man was injured in a shooting in this area around midnight.

The sound of gunfire, and her dog barking, woke Yvonne Scarselli in her Tarentum home around midnight Monday morning.

What Scarselli heard was a shooting that left an 18-year-old man dead and another, 19, wounded.

Scarselli said she heard what sounded like gunfire being exchanged near her home on Conroy Way, an alley on the west side of the borough. She said she first heard a loud bang, like a shotgun, followed by three smaller pops, which she believes were from a handgun.

“It’s probably over drugs,” she said Monday afternoon. “I stayed in my room.”

Allegheny County Police said the two men arrived at Allegheny Valley Hospital in a private vehicle.

The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him late Monday as Syncere Spruill, of Arnold.

The 19-year-old was last known to be in stable condition, county police said.

County detectives determined the shooting happened in the 200 block of Conroy Way.

Tarentum police Chief William Vakulick did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

County police said detectives are investigating.

Anyone who saw or heard anything shortly before midnight Sunday night in the area of the 200 block of Conroy Way is asked to call the county police tip line at 833-255-8477. Callers can remain anonymous.
